Reading Serge's latest progress thread, Hesh asked a question that has been on my mind for a while as well... What kind of music do you folks like to listen to?

For me it's mostly be-bop Jazz a la Davis, Coltrane and Ella. But I don't mind classic rock. Zeppelin being my favorite rock band.

In my other life I'm a part time youth minister so I find myself being subjected to a lot of hip-hop. I can't stand that talentless noise.
Other than that I'll stomach just about anything. Non-vocal bluegrass is high on my list. Rock-a-billy is also up there.

Yeah Zeppelin for sure. Lately I've been listening to Jack Johnson, Smash Mouth, and The Black Crowes.

Oh, and if we're listing all-time favorites, then I guess The Clash would be high on my list.PaulB38854.363287037

For me, my favorite artists are Jonatha Brooke, Michael Hedges, Mark Condon and Skid Row I still dig the 80s rock now and then!

That is an equal mix of ,Folk/fingerstyle/contemporary christan and metal for a well rounded diet.

Bluegrass primarily, both old and new. But also listen to the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch, Son Volt, and a host of others. I just really like bluegrass, and since that's mostly what I play, I listen to it to learn...

Bit of a mixed bag. Most of my listening is singer-songwriters, fair splashing of alt.country, some folk, some fingerstyle here and there, pseudo-bluegrass, classic rock, hard rock, grunge..

Artists I'm listening to quite a bit of lately (according to my iPod's recently played list) include:

- Josh Ritter (latest album is great, hope to see him live end of the month)
- Jason Mraz (ignore the radio play easy-listening pop image; the guy's a fantastic live performer, mostly listen to his live shows)
- Jack Johnson (perfect summer funky chilled out happy songs)
- Nickel Creek (latest album is excellent)
- Alice in Chains (Dirt and Unplugged)
- Tommy Emmanuel
- Gillian Welch (amazing stuff)
- Ryan Adams (Love is Hell and Heartbreaker still top the list)
- Damien Rice (wish he'd release a proper new album.)

And the odd smattering of classical/orchestral/piano sonatas if I'm the right frame of mind.

Everything that has stringed instruments in it from Bluegrass, country, country rock, soul, blues, jazz, classical to Hard rock and heavy metal. I appreciate all the talent that' out there except for hip hop and rap which both i can't stand!

Tommy Emmanuel and Howard are now both at the top of my list, thanks to this great forum!

I love lots of different styles of music. I have a 30G ipod with classical, flamenco, classic rock, oldies (hits from 50's 60's 70's a little from the 80's), bluegrass, a little country, folk, tons of fingerstyle guitar music with artists like Tommy Emmanuel, Laurence Juber, Phil Keaggy, Pierre Bensusan, Leo Kottke and many others. The only styles I really can't handle is rap, hip hop, punk and pop.

I prefer classical, especially classical guitar, and smooth jazz. I've also recorded a couple of CDs of my own compositions, which include styles that range from classical to new age to blues to whatever, and I like listening to them as well.

Best,

Michael

I'm across the spectrum, too. Recently I've been listening to these, and
they're all on iTunes:

Susan Tedeschi - southern soulish.
The Normals - a Christian band that's no more. Very cool progressive
rock with ES-335's, LP's, and Vox amps.
Miranda Lambert - a young country artist.
Traditional gospel.
Charlie Hall.

I love rap. I love the beats and the bass. It's difficult to find lyrical
content that inspires me though.

I've been into more indie-minded folk and rock stuff the last couple years. some favorites are Pedro the Lion, Clem Snide, Rosie Thomas, Bill Mallonee (Vigilantes of Love), They Might Be Giants, Boondogs (friends of mine from Little Rock).

Probably my most favorite in recent years is Sufjan Stevens. His album Greetings From Michigan might be my favorite album ever. Here's an interesting story on NPR where radio reporters asked him to write a song about Brinkly, Arkansas the town where the ivory billed woodpecker was sighted last year. They gave him the audio tapes of the interview, and he wrote the song "The Lord God Bird." Pretty interesting story/song.

I also love Wilco, Nickel Creek, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings...

I do enjoy some rap, it's just like any genre of music, you have to dig to find the creative and thoughtful stuff.

Well, I've really enjoyed listening to country and bluegrass the last few years.
Bluegrass of any kind is good, and most country is too, with the exception of the really rowdy stuff, and Shania Twain. Now don't get me wrong, Shania is great to look at, but not so much to listen to.

I like (in no particular order):
ACUS
Ricky Scaggs
Brad Paisley
Buddy Jewel
Alan Jackson
George Straight
Martina McBride
Carrie Underwood
Garth Brooks
Trisha Yearwood
Lonestar
Brooks & Dunn
Vince Gill
Miranda Lambert
Little Big Town - a new band with great music and vocals.

Of course there's the other stuff...
James Taylor
Crosby Stills & Nash (you can throw Young in there too)
Pure Prairie League
Poco
America
Bread
Dan Fogelberg

&

Norah Jones is hot!
Bruce Hornsby - yeah...that's the stuff!
Diana Kroll - wow...

OK, so I'm stuck in the past, although I do like a lot of the indie-rock stuff my daughter finds - but I never know the names of the groups.

I listen to prewar hot jazz...

Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli
Al Casey (Fats Wallers guitar...killer chops and very young when recorded)
The Cats and a Fiddle (Tiple and tenor Guitar Leads...smokin!)
Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang
Jack Teagarden and early Tommy Dorsey (I'm a 'bone player, too)
Hoagy Carmichael and Bix Beiderbecke (Great early Indiana Jazz)
The Hoosier Hotshots (My hometown boys)

The great Hawai'ian steel guitar players like King Benny Nawahe and Sol Ho'opi'i. These guys were a huge influence on the west coast jazz scene in the 1920s and 30s

I have and have listened to many, many uke recording, but I draw my inspiration from the old band and guitar stuff.hoosierukes38854.4963541667

mine is varied, I am old enough to love a lot of 50's 60's and 70's music. Hard rock, blues, and the latest kick I'm on is classical guitar.    . Springstein, clapton, johnny lang, stones, zep, tull, dave mathews.
Never really into the beatles. I think I liked things a bit rougher at that time. Steppenwolf was a fav, as was johnny and edger winters. But then theres that classical guitar. Probably due to my last instructor bein an accomplished classical player. No hip hop !!!

I'll also enjoy some classical but I prefer solo piano pieces... Bach, Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert to name a few...

I love everything except new music, I just find it overcommercialized junk food for the ears these days.    Kid bands with too much time to whine about stuff, and young men and women that are preoccupied with sex money and materialism in general.

Im really listening to the bop, and hard bop era of jazz with an occasional swing and blue jazz thrown in for good measure right now,
Of course I love classic rock - but when youve memorized every song ever written from that era, you have to branch out -
I like Country from the 50's clear on up to the 80's,
and the same goes with Motown, Raggae, Hawai'ian, Klezmer, Soul, Funk, Blues{mainly country and delta more than chicago style}, Classical, Swing, Gospel, RnB, -
I can llisten to about 1 hour of bluegrass b4 I want to scratch my eyes out, etc etc etc etc etc etc.
Frank ZAPPA!!! til about 78,

Thats not to say I dont like ANY new music,
Nirvana, Gnarls Barkley, Hawksley Workman, David Gray, Michael Hedges, Leo K, Ernest Ranglin, Jamiroquai, Rheostatics, Jeff Buckley R.I.P., St Germain, Ween, Radiohead, Beck, Herbaliser, some Dub,and Dancehall,
Habib Koite {from Mali, anyone who hasnt checked out this guy is in for a real treat! what a guitar style!}
thats enough typing......
I could have said eclectic and gotten it over with.
Cheers
Charliewood
